Kyiv (Kiev) Founders Monument
The monument to the Founders of Kiev or Kyiv Founders Monument as it is known, is a stunning and impressive monument located on the bank of the river Dnieper offering an awesome backdrop for some great photo opportunities.
Getting to the monument is a bit tricky. You can either take the metro to Dnipro station and walk for about 15 minutes along the river bank, or take a taxi. It is a bit in the middle of nowhere so make you plan accordingly. Can get busy at weekends as this is a favourite spot for wedding parties.
Legend says that Kiev (Kyiv) was founded by three brothers Kyy, Khoryv, Shchek and their sister Lybid. To celebrate the 1500th anniversary of Kiev, on the 22nd May 1982 a forged copper monument was erected in Navodnytskyy Park next to the river Dnipro. It was made by a sculptor V.Z Boroday and an architect called M.M. Feshchenko.
The length of the boat is 9 metres and the height of the figures are as follows; brothers are 4.3 metres high and the figure of Lybid is 3.8 metres high. It is not easy to get to or to find without the use of a car. If you use the metro directions are as follows: If you Get off at Dnipro Station (red metro line), go downstairs and exit left, then turn right and begin walking. There will be a fork in the road, go right and cross the street. Keep walking for about 5 or 10 minutes and you will see a place to cross the street (underground) and then walk for a couple of minutes and it will be on your left.
A second monument was erected in Maydan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in 2000 – 2001.
