Beautiful Cathedral set in peaceful and tranquil surroundings, awe inspiring!

Saint Sophia cathedral was founded by Grand Prince Yaroslav the Wise and built between 1037 and 1044. The church is currently being restored and you can see the new work as well as the old frescoes and mosaic. The 11th century frescoes on the walls and ceiling are remarkable and many of the mosaics and frescoes date back to the 11th century.

St. Sophia cathedral in Kyiv (Kiev) is the most ancient Christian church that is fully preserved in Eastern Slavic countries. It became the birth place of Kyivan Christianity, statehood and culture.

A number of the cathedral's features are extremely rare and were unknown to all outside of Kyivan Rus’ prior to its construction. Among the most notable are the number of domes and their elongation, the marked pyramidal form and overall striving for height, the fact that the width of its body is greater than its length and the combined use of mosaics and frescoes.

It costs 20 UAH to enter the grounds which are very peaceful to walk around and sit in. But we would recommend paying to enter the cathedral too (cost 100 UAH) otherwise you would be missing the best part of the visit. The ticket also gives you entry to the Refectory, which has a historical exhibition with interesting maps and information of the former Kievan Rus, and also the Zaborovsky Gate, which contained a small exhibition about Cyrillic calligraphy. In the cathedral you can also explore the second floor, which gives you amazing views of the pulpit below.

You should also check out the Metropolitan’s House, Refectory, Bakery and the Bell Tower which are also located within the complex. You can also climb up the Bell Tower and see amazing views across the city.
